For millions of spectators, the Fiesta Flambeau® Parade has become a dazzling tradition that lights the way through the grand finale of Fiesta San Antonio. Known as “America’s Largest Illuminated Night Parade”—and often celebrated as the very best of America’s parades—it brings together light, music, and joy in a spectacle like no other.

The word “Flambeau” comes from the French term for a tall candlestick or torch. Since its founding, parade participants have carried both, transforming the cool Texas night into a sky filled with thousands of twinkling lights.

A Vision Is Born
The idea for a lighted night parade was the brainchild of Reynolds Andricks, a civil engineer elected to the Fiesta San Jacinto Association Board in 1948. Despite admitting he “knew nothing about parades,” Andricks believed Fiesta needed something fresh and unforgettable. He drew inspiration from the glowing night parades of Mardi Gras in New Orleans but envisioned an event uniquely San Antonio.

His timing was perfect. At the same time, William Petmecky of Fredericksburg—already recognized nationally as a “festival impresario”—was known for creating beloved cultural celebrations, including the famed Easter Fires Pageant. When asked to help bring this new illuminated parade to life, Petmecky eagerly joined forces with Andricks, and together they set the stage for a Fiesta tradition that would grow into a world-class event.

A Parade Like No Other
From its modest beginnings, the Fiesta Flambeau® Parade has grown into a breathtaking extravaganza. Today, more than 150 entries—including floats, marching bands, and performing groups—travel along a 3.1-mile route through the heart of historic downtown San Antonio.

The magic doesn’t stop at the curb. More than 800,000 spectators line the streets each year, while another 1.5 million viewers enjoy the syndicated broadcast and live stream.
